Baking Cookies Like Grandma Made

Delicious Shorbread Hearts

These delicious shortbread cookie hearts are perfect for Valentine’s day or any day for that matter!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/4 cup white baking chips
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon shortening
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring
  • tiny heart candies, for decor (optional)

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375F/190C.
  2. Using an electric mix, beat together butter, powdered sugar, almond extract, and food coloring for about 2 minutes. Add flour and almonds and mix again.
  3. Divide cookie dough in half, covering one and setting it aside. Place the other half on ungreased cookie sheet.
  4. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, or a knife, cut dough into 1/4 inch thick heart shapes.
  5. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Let cool on sheet for 25 minutes, then remove.  Repeat steps 4 through 5 with the other half of the cookie dough.
  6. Place the baking chips and shortening into a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave, uncovered, for about 1 minute and 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds, until mixture is smooth.
  7. Drizzle baking chips mixture over heart-shaped shortbread cookies and sprinkle with candy hearts.
